2016 Volunteer the Year

Mrs. Deborah Smith

The compassion this volunteer shows to Meals on Wheels and our clients is an inspiration for us all. She treats everyone with respect and kindness, no matter what the situation. We all know how stressful it can be for the people who find themselves in need of the services we provide, and her words and actions go a long way toward helping them keep their dignity. We just want her to know that her work has not gone unnoticed.   She has been volunteering with us since 2000 and has been a board member since 2007.  Mrs. Smith is a devoted wife and mother.  She and her husband have three children, nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Since retiring from Brown and Williams in 2005, she has been active in the Bibb County school system volunteering with the Parent Teacher Organization.  She has acted as a testing assistant, helped during spring fairs and chaperoned field trips.  Ms. Smith also is very active in the Local APRI.

Deborah attends Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist church serving on the deaconess board and working on the church’s culinary committee.  In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her family traveling on summer vacation or just all gathered in her kitchen feasting on meals and catching up on all of the happenings with her growing family.   Mrs. Smith’s  children were able to celebrate with us as we honored their mother.

Getting Involved

Volunteers are the hearts and hands of Meals on Wheels programs. Their caring, dedicated, and generous help is what makes our program so successful and helps more and more seniors every year maintain their independence in their home as long as possible.

As a volunteer you would have an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of Meals on Wheels recipients.  For someone who is alone, it can make the world of difference to be visited by a Meals on Wheels volunteer, someone who cares.

Each weekday volunteers deliver meals to the homes of 16 to 20 homebound elderly or disabled clients who can no longer prepare balanced meals for themselves.

What a blessing it is to serve!  Orientation and training is provided.  For more information or to join our team please contact us.
